Stress Management
Some PSC patients have found stress relief by adding certain non-invasive activities that help to soothe the strain of living with PSC.
Activities
Many people living with PSC find stress relief by incorporating non-invasive, supportive practices into their daily routines. These activities can help ease both physical and emotional strain and may include:
- Acupuncture
- Yoga
- Biofeedback
- Massage
- Chiropractic care
In addition, engaging in appropriate levels of physical activity—based on your individual ability—can be an effective way for both patients and family members to release tension and support overall well-being.
Before starting any new activity, it’s important to consult with your physician to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for your specific situation.”
Friends and Family
It’s important to ask for help from friends and family members. You may not be able to do what you used to. Take folks up on their kind offers to help. It will be a great stress reliever. You can strengthen this support system by being clear and specific about what you need—whether it’s help with daily tasks, emotional support, or simply companionship. Setting realistic expectations with your inner circle reduces pressure on everyone and creates a more sustainable rhythm of support. Remember, allowing others to show up for you not only lightens your load but also deepens connection and trust, which are critical buffers against stress.
Counseling
Many people, from children to seniors, have medical and life issues to deal with, so counseling with a clergy member or trained counseling professional may help. Medical centers often have trained staff psychologists who work with chronic disease patients. Your physician can make a referral.
Emotions, Spirituality
For many PSC patients and caregivers, enriching their spiritual life, however they define it, can bring a sense of understanding and calm.
Cultivating a sense of perspective and a sense of humor may reframe the situation and even relieve symptoms.
Medications
For some patients, antidepressant medications are appropriate in handling depression and anxiety resulting from difficult situations. Medication for depression/anxiety can be a lifesaver, and may:
- Assist in coping with problems
- Help you reason better, and
- Diminish the anguish that can accompany chronic disease
